Morgan Frictionwood Turkey Caller

Anyone bitten by the addiction of hunting wild turkey in the spring knows that you can never have too many turkey calls.

It's not just a matter of finding one call that sounds "better" than another; every call sounds different. Every wild turkey sounds different, too. There is a certain quest among true-to-the-word turkey hunters to always seek that special turkey call that someday might be pulled out of our vests to do the trick when nothing else will work.

For me, a big part of that quest is acquiring and using handmade wooden calls of all kinds. I recently had the chance to acquire and use a very different, simply-made but sweet-sounding wooden call. Fellow turkey hunter, Kenny Morgan, makes the Frictionwood Turkey Caller in Louisiana. The call is handcrafted from a single block of wood and comes with a corncob striker.

Simple to use? You bet. And it is ideal for the beginner or expert alike. I literally had my 3-year-old making awesome yelps with the Morgan caller in minutes. The call operates like a peg and slate but is all wood with a slit in one side of the block.

With the chalk supplied in the corn cob striker, you chalk the backside of the call. Both the slotted and solid sides may be used for calling, with different sounds coming from each. Then you simply hold the striker like a pen and stroke it across the chalked surface. I was amazed at how good this little call sounded for as simple as it is. Perfect yelps, clucks and purrs were a cinch. I found it easy to run the call very softly and could make it really ring out to elicit a shock gobble from a big, old tom.

I am pleased to add this one to my vest and hope to pull it out to lure in a wise old gobbler this spring. For a color catalog this Frictionwood caller and other turkey hunting calls and products, contact Morgan's Turkey Callers, LLC, PO Box 1880, Dept. OT, Jackson, LA 70748.
